Two new 50-gauge ship-to-shore (STS) container cranes have arrived at the Jacksonville Port Authority’s (JAXPORT) Blount Island Marine Terminal.

Built by Germany-based Liebherr Crane Company, the cranes were delivered in large components and are currently being assembled on site. They are expected to be operational by the end of 2025.

A third 50-gauge crane is under construction at Liebherr’s facility in Ireland, with delivery scheduled for December 2025. It will be installed at JAXPORT’s Talleyrand Marine Terminal in early 2026.

Each crane handles 19-wide vessels and lifts up to 65 tonnes.

The cranes also feature regenerative power systems that generate electricity when lowering containers, improving energy efficiency and cutting emissions.

The $53 million for the crane acquisitions came from Florida state funding allocated to JAXPORT over the past two years.

JAXPORT CEO Eric Green said: “We are grateful to Governor Ron DeSantis, the Florida Legislature, and the Florida Department of Transportation for their longstanding support of Florida’s largest container port.

“The state’s continued investment in world-class transportation infrastructure allows more cargo to move through Jacksonville, supporting jobs and economic growth for our region and the state.”

Last month, JAXPORT welcomed the Seaspan Montevideo, one of the first vessels to arrive under the new Gemini Cooperation.
