Port Authority of NSW has become the first Australian port to be certified by the maritime environmental programme, Green Marine.

It benchmarks performance at all six port locations in NSW against robust performance metrics, including air emissions, water quality, community relations, noise, and waste management.
Additionally, the port has obtained Silver Partner status under the NSW Government’s Sustainability Advantage programme, marking a major milestone and building upon Port Authority’s success as a Bronze Partner, awarded in 2021.
The recognition reflects Port Authority’s achievements in embedding sustainability into operations, culture and decision-making.
This includes defining, measuring and disclosing scope 3 emissions and making progress towards scope 1 and 2 net-zero targets.
The Authority has also undertaken a climate change risk assessment and adaptation plan. In addition, it has introduced initiatives aimed at improving operational performance and resource efficiency.
Finally, the Authority has enhanced data collection and monitoring for continuous improvement.
In January 2024, Port Authority reached the significant net-zero milestone of reducing Scope 2 greenhouse gas emissions to zero through the purchase of renewable energy under a Power Purchase Agreement.
Port Authority is continuing to invest significantly in Shore Power at White Bay Cruise Terminal, which will enable ships to plug into landside renewable energy when at berth.
The Southern Hemisphere-first project is set to be completed in 2026.
Earlier this May, the Port Authority of NSW announced it will engage in a multi-agency exercise to test its emergency response to hazardous materials in a simulated chemical spill off a vessel at berth in the outer harbour.
